THURLE DOWN/STREATLEY WARREN SOUTH Share THURLE DOWN/STREATLEY WARREN SOUTH (Queens/Jacks) Our most used site . Taking winds between South and South-East, it is open all year round. It isn't steep, it isn't high, but it does produce surprisingly good lift in wind speeds of 10-15 mph. Not recommended for low airtime pilots when unstable conditions are presen t or in winds over 12 mph. Trees along the top of the hill do not take too kindly to being blown back into! Localised wave lift, although not common, has been experienced on this site and is usually preceded by rough, sometimes thermic air. Jacks is the west side of the hill. Use this if cattle are present in Queens (main ridge). Access is through gate to east of car park, by road. Please shut all gates and park considerately in Ridgeway car park. Do not climb fences, but the small electric cable near bottom can, of course, be stepped over. Ordnance Survey Map: Explorer 170 SU 566816 Wind Directions: South-Sou th-west to South-e ast.
